Avi here.

We interrupt this scholarly narrative to remedy some common misconceptions. Or conceptions. Or whatever.

Leaving the Douro valley today we stopped briefly in Amarante, a pretty little town built around a pretty little river and boasting a lovely church honouring São Gonçalo.

São Gonçalo himself is associated with several miracles and is a pilgrimage destination for those seeking a matrimonial match and possibly fertility. This leads to the curious pastries historically produced in the town, plus the modern tourist spinoffs.

Either in irony or by accident, the Google map reference for the São Gonçalo church states "noted for its large organ". Not what you're thinking.

I'm starting to think this blog is mistitled, since Avi has been posting more often and more enthusiastically than I have! I plead technological frustration, however, having been dealing with aggravating computer and email problems for the past several days and spending my late evenings dealing with tech support at Shaw and Apple instead of enjoying more amusing pursuits such as writing entertaining blog posts. The problems seem to have been solved, at least for now, so I hope to catch up to Avi soon – in quantity if not in quality!
